First-year garners first career weekly league honor
WASHINGTON - GW first-year center Kayla Mokwuah was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Monday after her performances in the Colonials' wins over Massachusetts and St. Bonaventure.
This is the first career honor for Mokwuah, who joins teammate Mei-Lyn Bautista (Player of the Week, Jan. 28) as GW's weekly award recipients this year.
Mokwuah nearly averaged a double-double in the two games with 10.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg. She also shot 50.0 percent from the floor, 87.5 percent from the free throw line and recorded five blocks and three assists.
The Longmeadow, Mass., native made the most of her homecoming in her second career start on Wednesday, registering a monster double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, the first double-double of her career. Mokwuah hit 7-of-8 from the charity stripe and swatted four Minutewomen shots in 28 minutes of action.
The 16 rebounds were a new career-high, 10 more than her previous best. It also marked the most boards by a Colonial in any game this season.
While Mokwuah's double-digit point streak ended at four games on Sunday, she still provided valuable contributions in the win over St. Bonaventure, scoring six points on 3-of-5 shooting to go along with three rebounds in 15 minutes.
Mokwuah has seen her game blossom recently with her inclusion in the starting lineup. She is now fourth on the team in scoring at 6.3 ppg, a mark that has increased to 7.6 ppg against A-10 competition.
GW returns to action on Wednesday in its final regular season home game against Duquesne at 7 p.m.
