Colonials walked off the Mountaineers in game two
WASHINGTONÂ - Faith Weber singled home Jenna Cone to give GW softball a 7-6 walk-off win over Mount St. Mary's and a sweep of Friday's home-opening doubleheader.
After nixing a weekend road trip due to weather concerns, the Colonials played host to the Mountaineers and picked up a pair of victories on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW used a 13-hit attack and a strong pitching effort from Sierra Lange to take the opener, 5-1, before rallying to take the second game in thrilling fashion.
Lange earned wins in both games and also finished the day 6-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Buff and Blue, who improved to 5-2 on the season.
GW 5, Mount St. Mary's 1:Â Lange powered the Colonials to victory in the opener with an excellent two-way performance. The sophomore from Texas yielded just a run on two hits and struck out 11 Mountaineers in her complete-game victory. She also helped her own cause with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Lange scored the game's first run in the second inning, racing home on Priscilla Martinez's double. The Colonials extended their advantage via Cone's RBI double in the third and Marta Fuentes' run-scoring hit in the fourth.Â
The lead reached 5-0 in the fifth thanks to additional RBI singles from Lange and Priscilla Martinez.
That was plenty for Lange, who retired the final four batters she faced after Mount St. Mary's ended her shutout bid with a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
Seven different Colonials recorded hits in the victory with Cone and Martinez notching three apiece.
GW 7, Mount St. Mary's 6:Â The Colonials needed a comeback after allowing two runs in the top of the seventh to fall behind by a run. They made it happen via three singles and an error to plate two runs without making an out.
A single by Jessica Linquist and a Mount St. Mary's miscue set up Lange's game-tying single. Then, Weber smacked a single to right off the second baseman's glove to plate Cone to clinch the victory.
GW scored two runs in the first and increased its lead to 5-1 in the fifth. Cone cracked her first home run of the season - a two-run shot to score Linquist - and Weber followed with an RBI single after a Lange double.
GW held down Mount St. Mary's by using five different pitchers over the first five innings, but the Mountaineers climbed back with three in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Morgan Alisauckas put the visitors up 6-5 with a two-out, two-run double off Lange.
Lange matched her career high with four hits in the game and improved to 4-1 on the season by picking up the win in relief.Â
Weber drove in three runs in her first start of the season and also pitched an inning.Â
Cone finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Linquist also chipped in a pair of hits for her fifth multi-hit effort in seven games to start the season.
ON DECK:Â GW is back on its home field on Sunday for a doubleheader vs. Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
