Gymnastics Takes Pair of EAGL Honors

Zois named Gymnast of the Week, Banen tabbed as Rookie of the Week
WASHINGTON – The George Washington gymnastics team has claimed two East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) weekly awards. Fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois has been named EAGL Gymnast of the week for the first time this season, while first-year Simone Banen earns Rookie of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
Zois put forth an outstanding effort on Friday evening at GW's Pink Meet, ending the day with a first place and season-high 39.300, a mark that ranks first in EAGL and 47thnationally. The Crofton, Md., product made four podium appearances on the night, posting a new season-high on vault (9.775), matching her season-high on bars (9.825) and scoring a career-high matching 9.900 on floor. Her 39.300 also marks the fourth time she has surpassed the 39.000 threshold this season and the 11th time she has done so in her career.
Banen takes Rookie of the Week Honors after putting up a trio of solid performances on Friday night. The Wyckoff, New Jersey, native matched her season-high on bars with a 9.800 and also set a new career-high on floor with a 9.800. Banen finished the night with a pair of top-5 finishes, finishing tied-for-fourth on bars and tied-for-fifth on floor. She also added a 9.700 on beam.
The Colonials return to action on Friday, February 15 when they head to Oklahoma to face No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 18 Washington and No. 19 Arizona State for the Perfect 10 Challenge.
