Colonials cruised past crosstown rivals
WASHINGTON - GW women's swimming & diving swept the swimming events Saturday on the way to a 158-47 win over Howard in a District showdown at Burr Gym Pool.
The Colonials flashed their depth with seven different swimmers combining to take the eight individual races. Gemma Atherley was a double winner for the Buff and Blue in the 100 and 200 free and also contributed to a victory in the meet-closing 400 free relay.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Atherley led a sweep of the top three places in the 200 free, finishing in 1:54.27 with Grace Olivardia and Sydney Melnick close behind. The senior from the Channel Islands later took the 100 free in 53.66 seconds. She teamed with Isabela Patino, Jackie Torrez and Rebecca Smolcic for the relay win (3:34.07).
- The Colonials also went 1-2-3 in the 500 free and 100 back. Patino won the 500 free in 4:41.16 ahead of Andrea Ho and Olivardia, while Smolcic was tops in the 100 back (:59.71) with Tali Lemcoff and Becca Brown next.
- GW had the top two teams in all three relays. The team of Ho, Stine Omdahl Petersen, Meghan Burton and Brown won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.95, while the team of Burton, Melnick, Smolcic and Brown was victorious in the 200 free relay (1:37.33).
- Brown won the 50 free in 24.50 seconds with Burton taking second.
- Ann Juneau claimed the 100 breast in 1:07.82 ahead of teammate Elisabeth Vogel.
- Torrez (200 IM, 1:57.14) and Petersen (100 fly, :58.92) also picked up individual wins.
- Caitlin Inall led the Colonial divers with a second-place finish on the 1-meter board (241.55).
UP NEXT: GW has next weekend off before heading to the Queens University Fall Frenzy from Nov. 22-24 in Charlotte, N.C.
