Colonials in action at a pair of Tar Heel State meets
Starting Thursday, the divers will be in action at the NC State/GAC Invitational in Greensboro, N.C., while the swimmers kick off the three-day Queens University Fall Frenzy in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW landed a sweep at District foe Howard on Nov. 9 in its most recent competition.
Dylan Arzoni, Andrew Cho and Tyler Kawakami picked up two individual wins apiece to lead the men vs. the Bison. Kawakami, a first-year from Hawaii, was named A-10 Rookie of the Week after touching first in the 100 free and 100 breast and also contributing to a victory in the 400 free relay.
The women flashed their depth with seven different swimmers combining to take the eight individual races. Gemma Atherley was a double winner for the Buff and Blue in the 100 and 200 free and also contributed to a victory in the meet-closing 400 free relay.
JUNEAU'S JUMP:Â Ann Juneau has put together a tremendous fall, showcasing her progress as a sophomore. The Pennsylvania native posted the best 200 IM time (2:07.33) among Colonials this season vs. Boston College on Oct. 19. Her time of 2:07.33 ranks ninth in the Atlantic 10 so far.
Juneau's season-best times in the 100 breast (1:06.89), 200 breast (2:22.53) and 400 IM (4:31.69) all rank among the top three on the squad and the top 14 in the conference.
GOING THE DISTANCE:Â The GW men demonstrated their distance strength at the 2019 A-10 Championship with Moritz Fath (gold), Josh Legge (silver) and DH Hwang (bronze) combining to sweep the podium in the 1,650 free.
The Colonials will get their first crack of the season at the race this weekend, and they've continued to shine in the distance events this fall.
The Buff and Blue have produced four of the top five times among A-10 competitors in the 500 free with Fath (4:35.20) on top and Legge (4:40.22), Hwang (4:41.26) and first-year Zach Hu (4:41.61) also in the mix.
Hwang touched second in the 1,000 free at Virginia Tech in 9:35.68, the top time in the A-10 this season. Hu (9:39.46), Legge (9:39.79) and Fath (9:50.69) are also among the conference's top seven in that event.
HE'S BACK: Peter Nachtwey has returned to lead the GW divers after becoming the first Colonial man in 25 years to earn diving gold at the conference championships. The junior was named A-10 Most Outstanding Diver last February thanks to his win on the 3-meter board and runner-up finish on 1-meter.
Nachtwey has continued his excellence, highlighted by a season-best performance vs. Boston College. The Ohio native posted a season-high score of 289.58 on 3-meter against the Eagles and also landed a 282.45 on 1-meter. He recorded his 1-meter season best of 283.05 at Virginia Tech.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â The divers will test themselves against a host of Power Five schools at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, including representatives from the ACC (host NC State, Duke, Louisville), Big 10 (Wisconsin) and SEC (Auburn). The Colonials will tackle one board per day (Thursday: Women - 3M, Men - 1M, Friday: Women - 1M, Men - 3M) with Nachtwey and Spencer Bystrom also competing on platform on Saturday.
The swimmers will be challenged facing off against host Queens University, which has won five straight Division II national titles on both sides. The Royals finished first in both the men's and women's standings at this event last season with the Buff and Blue close behind.
All three days at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center will feature preliminary races in the morning followed by a round of evening finals to mirror the A-10 Championship format.
COMING UP:Â A select group of swimmers will head to USAÂ Swimming Winter Nationals on Dec. 4-7 in Atlanta. The women will host Richmond in an A-10 showdown at Smith Center Pool on Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. in the program's final team competition of the fall.
