Colonials top Massachusetts, 2-1, in semifinal action
SAINT LOUIS – The George Washington women's soccer team will head to the Atlantic 10 Championship Final for the first time since 1997 after besting Massachusetts, 2-1, in semifinal action on Friday evening.
After an evenly matched first half that saw neither squad find the back of the net, the Colonials came out hot in the second with back-to-back tallies from the leading scorer pair of Rachel Sorkenn and Sofia Pavon. With the pressure mounting for UMass, the Minutewomen were able to get on the board with a breakaway goal from Lauren Bonavita to cut the deficit in half with 10 minutes to play. With a chance to make the final eminent, the Buff and Blue back line stayed steady and was able to halt UMass in the game's final minutes to secure the 2-1 victory.
With the win, the Colonials will look to claim the Atlantic 10 Championship crown for the first time in program history. The squad will face A-10 regular season champion Saint Louis on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
