Colonials fall to Saint Louis, 3-1
SAINT LOUIS – In its first appearance in an Atlantic 10 Championship since 1997, the George Washington women's soccer team took to the pitch on Sunday afternoon in Saint Louis' Hermann Stadium to compete for its first A-10 title in program history. After a season that saw the Colonials picked ninth in the preseason poll, the squad exceeded expectations, earning the No. 2 seed with a 7-1-2 mark in conference action.
With a 3-0 shutout victory in the quarterfinals against Saint Joseph's on home turf, the Buff and Blue took to Saint Louis for the semifinals on Friday, besting the third-seeded Minutewomen, 2-1, to earn a spot in the conference finals.
The Bilikens, playing on their home turf, demonstrated their dominance in the game's first half with a pair of penalty kicks that gave the regular season champion a 2-0 advantage just eight minutes into the contest. Riding on its momentum, SLU was able to bump its advantage to three with a strike at the 17th minute. Despite the deficit, the Colonials continued to battle the relentless Saint Louis back line and had a pair of chances to close the first half.
After hitting the reset button, the Buff and Blue saw two scoring opportunities before Rachel Sorkenn was able to give GW its first tally of the game with a snipe from outside the box into the upper left corner of the net. Isabelle Eskay punted the ball to Allie Nornes on the right, who found Sorkenn open for the strike. The goal kick-started the Colonials attack, as the squad had back-to-back chances as soon as the ball came back into play. Despite the late offensive push, the Billikens were able to halt the Colonials in the final minutes to secure their second straight Atlantic 10 Championship.
While the Bilikens lose seven impact seniors after this season, the Colonials will return eight of their 11 starters in 2020, including A-10 Second Team honorees Hannah Zaluski, Rachel Sorkenn, Maria Pareja and Madi Coyne, along with All-Rookie Team honoree Tamaki Machi.
