Senior is first Colonial in event in nine years
WASHINGTON - Senior Suzanne Dannheim is set to represent the Buff & Blue on Saturday morning at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6k competition is set to begin at 11:15 a.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: Dannheim is the second GW woman to qualify for the national championship, joining Megan Hogan, who did so in 2009 and 2010. Hogan finished 27th in the field as a junior in 2009 before posting an eighth-place finish in her senior year.
INSIDE DANNHEIM'S SEASON: The Jacksonville, Fla., native has had the greatest individual season for the program since Hogan's All-America years in 2009 and 2010. Dannheim won two events - the George Mason Invitational and Princeton Invitational - and repeated as an All-Conference performer by finishing second at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Four of Dannheim's times have been etched into program annals, including three of the seven fastest 6k times in the history of the program. She earned All-Region accolades by finishing seventh last weekend with a time of 20:24.6, the third-quickest in GW history.
ABOUT THE FIELD: A total of 255 participants will be at the national championships. The top two teams at each of the nine regionals automatically qualified for the national championships. The top four individual finishers in each race beyond the qualifying teams also advanced to the national championships, as was the case for Dannheim.
The remaining 13 at-large teams and two additional individuals were selected by the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee.
