First-year swimmers recognized after TYR Fall Classic
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following outstanding collegiate debuts at the TYR Fall Classic, George Washington swimmers George Aspougalis and Stine Omdahl Petersen were honored by the Atlantic 10 on Tuesday.
Aspougalis was named A-10 Men's Performer of the Week, while Omdahl Petersen picked up Women's Rookie of the Week honors.
Aspougalis helped the GW men to a third-place finish vs. top competition by recording a pair of individual wins over two days at Florida International. The Greece native claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (:55.43) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.90) in times that land him on GW's all-time top 10. He also contributed to third-place swims in 200- and 400-yard medley relays.
Omdahl Petersen made an instant impact in the GW lineup, picking up a third-place finish in the 200 breast vs. a decorated field. Her time of 2:21.51 ranks No. 7 on GW's all-time top 10.
The first-year from Norway was also seventh in the 100 breast (1:05.90) and 13th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.80). She swam excellent breaststroke legs on GW's 200 and 400 medley relays, as well.
After a break this weekend, GW is back in action at Navy on Friday, Oct. 18., ahead of its home debut at Smith Center Pool a day later vs. Boston College.
