Colonials open Atlantic 10 action with 4-0 victory
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer squad opened Atlantic 10 play in dominant fashion on Thursday evening, dropping Rhode Island, 4-0, at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 33rd Minute – After leading 7-3 in shots with 11 minutes to play in the half, the Colonials were finally able to break the deadlock with a goal from Maria Pareja. Sophomore Natalie Silberman threw the ball in perfectly to Pareja, who was able to net the first goal of her career with a shot right in front of the box.
• 39th Minute – GW was able to pad its lead just six minutes later with a goal from Beth Ellinport, the first of her career.
• 42nd Minute – The Colonials continued their offensive momentum and scored their third goal in a nine-minute span with a tally from senior Charley Prevost. Anya Heijst dribbled the ball around the Rams defenders and crossed it to Prevost, who shot the ball just past the Rhode Island keeper.
• 50th Minute – Hannah Zaluski became the third Colonial to score her first career goal with an early tally in the game's second stanza. The first-year defender was able to find the back of the net off of a rebound from Silberman.
NOTEWORTHY
• Today's match was a day of firsts for GW, as Maria Pareja, Beth Ellinport and Hannah Zaluski each recorded their first career goals for the Buff and Blue. Anya Heijst also earned her first point as a Colonial off of an assist, while Charley Prevost registered her first tally of the season against the Rams.
• Going into the break, the GW held a dominant 10-3 advantage in shots and went on to lead 20-6 in shots at the conclusion of the game.
• GW scored three goals in the first half in a nine-minute span, marking the team's most first-half goals this season.
• Keeper Anna Tapen made three saves between the posts, while first-year Erica Lorenzana made one save in 19:57 of play.
• With today's victory, the Colonials take a 13-12-2 edge over the Rams in the all-time series. GW has either won or gone to a draw with Rhode Island in its last six meetings, dating back to 2014.
• The Buff and Blue improves to 4-2-0 when playing at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
