Colonials rallied to beat Binghamton, 3-2, in overtime
WASHINGTON – George Washington men's soccer stormed back from two goals down to beat Binghamton, 3-2, in overtime Tuesday, winning a thriller on Oscar Haynes Brown's strike 70 seconds into extra time.
After falling into a 2-0 hole in the opening nine minutes, the Colonials rallied to force overtime on their home field thanks to second-half goals from Dylan Lightbourn and Marcelo Lage. Haynes Brown didn't waste any time in OT, collecting a pass from Sam Reavis and depositing a shot inside the left post for the golden goal, his Atlantic 10-leading eighth score of the season.
It was the second straight win for the Colonials, who improved to 4-3 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 6th Minute: Binghamton's Harris Brkovic started the scoring when he got free at the top of the 18-yard box and curled a shot inside the right post. (Binghamton 1, GW 0)
- 9th Minute: Three minutes later, Noah Luescher added on to the Binghamton lead with a one-time blast just under the crossbar off a feed from Connor McKnight. (Binghamton 2, GW 0)
- 69th Minute: Lightbourn got the comeback started, heading in a long throw-in from Joshua Yurasits for his second goal of the season. (Binghamton 2, GW 1)
- 80th Minute: Lage produced his first career goal to tie it up. Drini Redzepi sent a pass into the box after a failed clear on a corner kick, and Lage managed to poke it past Binghamton keeper Chris Shutler inside the right post. (GW 2, Binghamton 2)
- 92nd Minute: Haynes Brown ran onto a perfect ball from Reavis and made the most of his opportunity with his third game-winning goal of the season. (GW 3, Binghamton 2)
NOTEWORTHY
- Haynes Brown ranks among the top five nationally in both goals (eight) and points (18) this season. It was second career overtime goal for the sophomore from England. He also scored a golden goal to beat George Mason, 1-0, on Oct. 4, 2017.
- Yurasits ranks second on the squad with six points after picking up his fourth assist of the season. Redzepi also recorded his fourth assist to tie Yurasits for the team lead.
- Lightbourn's goal was the 10th of his career and the second of his senior season.
- Lage, a first-year defender, was solid on both ends. The Massachusetts native was the only GW position player to play all 91 minutes.
- Thor Arne Höfs made three saves to earn the victory in net. The senior keeper got some help from Gabriel Seemungal, who made a sliding save of a shot headed toward the open net in the 13th minute to keep the deficit at 2-0.
- GW outshot Binghamton, 15-12, for the game, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half and overtime.
- Twenty-one Colonials saw action in the victory, including Peirce Williams, who made his season debut in the second half.
UP NEXT: GW has a week break before heading to No. 9 Duke for its final tune-up for Atlantic 10 play. The Colonials return to North Carolina for their conference opener at Davidson four days later.
