Recent GW graduate to swim three backstroke events in Scotland
WASHINGTON – Recent GW graduate Gustav Hokfelt begins competing at the European Aquatics Championships on Friday representing his native Sweden. The former Colonial is set to swim all three backstroke events at the international meet, which runs through Aug. 12 at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.
On the heels of a sterling senior season in Buff and Blue, Hokfelt qualified for his first European Championships with his performance at the Stockholm Open last April. At that meet, he won a pair of silver medals and set a Swedish national record in the 100-meter backstroke.
Hokfelt graduated with a degree in Public Health in May as one of the most decorated swimmers in GW history. He totaled 15 A-10 medals in his career with 13 golds and closed his career with his first NCAA Championships appearance.
Last season, Hokfelt claimed seven golds at the Atlantic 10 Championships to help the Colonials win their second straight conference title before advancing to the national meet where he dropped a program and conference record in the 100-yard backstroke to finish 18th in the country.
In recognition of those efforts, Hokfelt was honored as GW's Male Athlete of the Year and J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Male Student-Athlete.
