WASHINGTON â€" The George Washington women's tennis squad narrowly defeated crosstown rival Georgetown, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (STLC). The victory marks the first time the Colonials have topped the Hoyas since 2009.
The Buff and Blue secured the early doubles point, with the duo of Maria Siopacha and Melis Bayraktaroglu winning their match at the top position while the pair of Victoria Kogan and Sara Grubac posted a victory at No. 3.
The doubles point proved to be the difference maker, as the teams split their singles matches evenly by winning three apiece. For the Colonials it was Siopacha, Bayraktaroglu, and Marie-Louise Decamps that came out on top in solo action with wins at the Nos. 1, 2, and 5 positions, respectively.
BROWNINGS' BULLETS: "Today was a great win. It was the first time since 2009 that we were able to beat Georgetown. We had very tough conditions today with the wind but we were able to prevail. This was a good match for us to prepare us for Towson on Sunday."
