WASHINGTON - James Winchester has resigned as head coach of the George Washington swimming and diving teams to take the same position at TCU.
"We are thrilled for James and his family to have this opportunity," said GW Athletics Director Tanya Vogel. "We will miss him and his outstanding contributions to our program and wish him the best of luck in Texas, while we look forward to recruiting the next head coach who will continue to elevate our program in the conference and national ranks."
Winchester guided the Colonials to new heights during his three seasons in Foggy Bottom, highlighted by back-to-back Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming and Diving titles in 2017 and 2018, the first in program history. He was honored as the A-10 Men's Swimming Coach of the Year after both championships.
The men's team was also represented on the national stage in each of Winchester's three seasons, first by two-time All-American Andrea Bolognesi in 2016 and 2017 and most recently by Gustav Hokfelt in March.
The women's squad also made significant progress under Winchester, rewriting the program record book and improving in the A-10 standings each season. The Colonials finished third at the conference meet in February, winning 13 total medals behind the performances of seven All-Conference honorees.
A search for GW's next swimming and diving head coach will begin immediately.
