DAYTON, Ohio - Elena Shelepak, Morgan Rinehart and Sierra Lange homered in George Washington softball's 14-12 win over Dayton to open a doubleheader Saturday at UD Softball Stadium.
With the victory, the Colonials equaled their program record for wins in a season with 28. They dropped the second game to the Flyers, 6-5, to finish the day.Marta Fuentes provided a major offensive spark for GW, finishing the doubleheader a combined 6-for-9 with five runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Rinehart and Lange each tallied four hits on the day for the Colonials (28-16, 8-8 A-10) against Dayton (22-20, 11-5).
GW 14, Dayton 12: The Colonials pounded out 14 runs on 15 hits en route to victory in the opener. It was the most runs they've scored in a conference game since a 17-0 win over St. Bonaventure on April 28, 2012.
GW trailed 4-0 before pushing across three runs in the second and four more in the third to take the lead for good. Shelepak got the Colonials on the board with a two-run home run, her ninth of the season and second in as many games.
Shelepak notched a two-run single in the third before Lange's RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Alessandra Ponce extended GW's lead to 7-5.
Olivia Ortlieb pitched in a run-scoring single in the fourth before the Colonials pulled away with six runs in the top of the sixth. Rinehart led off the frame with her fifth homer of the season, Jenna Cone walked with the bases loaded and Priscilla Martinez added a two-run single. Lange closed GW's scoring with her fifth long ball of the season, a solo shot to center field to make it 14-6.
Dayton clawed back with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Ashley Pilcher managed to squash the Flyers' comeback attempt, finishing the victory with a game-ending flyout with the potential tying run on first base.
Lange had her first career four-hit game and finished with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Fuentes had three hits and three runs scored. Ortlieb, Martinez, Shelepak, and Rinehart had two hits apiece and each knocked in at least one run.
Kaitlin Buff picked up her seventh victory of the season with four innings in relief of Lange, who pitched the first two innings.
Dayton 6, GW 5: The Colonials battled in the nightcap, but their seventh-inning rally fell just short. They scored three times in the final inning to pull within a run on Martinez's sacrifice fly that scored Ortlieb before Dayton's Jessica Weaver induced a popout to finish her complete game victory.
GW went in front, 2-0, in the third, taking advantage of a pair of Dayton errors. Sidney Bloomfield scored the first one after an error on the left fielder before Marta Fuentes crossed the plate on a throwing error by the catcher.
Dayton went in front with a four-run fourth inning and carried a 6-2 lead into the final frame before the visitors stormed back. Bloomfield walked and Fuentes singled before Ortlieb's first career triple cleared the bases. Weaver recovered to retire the next three batters for her fifth victory of the season.
Fuentes had three hits to raise her season average to .371. The junior shortstop also scored a pair of runs to raise her team-leading total to 43 for the spring.
Rinehart and Bloomfield also reached base three times apiece, both recording two hits and a walk. Ortlieb's late triple was the other hit for the Buff and Blue.
Sarah Costlow gave up five runs (three earned) in four innings to drop to 10-5 on the season.
UP NEXT: GW closes the weekend A-10 series Sunday with a noon first pitch for the rubber match.
