Women's Rowing Posts Best Team Finish at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington women's rowing team saw three of four boats medal in a field of 18 crews to post its best team finish at the 36th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday.
"Overall it was a really good day up in Philadelphia," said head coach Eric Carcich. "I want to thank Rebecca Grzybowski and her entire Temple staff for organizing a fantastic day of racing. We learned a lot this weekend, especially because the conditions changed drastically from the morning heat to afternoon final, forcing us to make some adjustments. I was really impressed with how the team dug their heels in during the finals"
Both the Varsity 8 and JV8 placed first in their respective morning heats to advance and clinch a spot in the afternoon Grand Finals, where the boats challenged their opponents and finished the day with a pair of third-place performances.
"This was the best team finish we have had at Murphy Cup during my time at GW," said Carcich. "With that said, both Temple and Drexel were able to get their bows out ahead in the Varsity 8 and JV 8 leaving us hungry to get back to DC to keep getting better"
The Varsity 8 placed third out of six schools in the final, finishing in 7:26.02. Drexel topped the field with a time of 7:18.41 with Temple (7:25.40) finishing just 1.38 seconds before the Colonials (7:26.02). GW edged out Delaware, Fordham, and Wesleyan.
The JV8 also pushed their opponents in the Grand Final, finishing just behind Temple and Drexel, and ahead of Connecticut, Lehigh, and Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's.
The 3V8 also dominated on the water in their race, finishing first in their final over Delaware, Saint Joseph's, Thomas Jefferson, Temple, and Drexel. The first-place finish marks the Colonials' first gold medal at the Murphy Cup.
With another great weekend of racing behind them, the Colonials will now turn their attention to the GW Invite next weekend.
