PISCATAWAY, N.J. - George Washington's Peter Nachtwey closed the NCAA Zone A Championships strong on Wednesday with a 12th-place finish on platform.
Nachtwey scored 507.15 points over 12 dives on the final day at Rutgers Aquatic Center. The freshman from Ohio posted a score of 265.20 during the preliminary round and held his place in the standings by scoring 241.95 points with his final six dives of the day.
"Peter had an outstanding first NCAA Zones performance on platform today," head diving coach Anthony Crowder said. "It was a great learning opportunity for him, and I'm very happy with his performance."
Nachtwey's effort Wednesday capped a banner season for GW's divers. The Colonials had six divers â€" four men and two women â€" score on both boards at last month's A-10 Championships and advanced Nachtwey, junior Jake Ortiz and freshman Nick Tomczyk to NCAA qualifying.
Nachtwey, who earned a pair of silver medals at the conference meet, placed 28th (3-meter) and 36th (1-meter) in the first two events this week. He finishes his freshman season as the program record holder on both 3-meter (362.63) and platform (267.35).
Ortiz has GW's program record for 1-meter (330.67) and led the Colonials on that board Tuesday in his second straight NCAA Zones appearances, while Tomczyk posted solid scores and gained valuable experience in his debut at the regional meet.
