NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Clifford Thompson of the GW golf team has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Friday. It marks the first career weekly award for Thompson.

A native of Broederstroom, South Africa, Thompson turned in the lowest round of his young career with a 3-under par 67 on Tuesday to finish tied for 26th at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate. After stumbling out of the gate with an 80 in the first round, he responded well with a 74 in round two and then shaved another seven strokes off on Tuesday to record the second-lowest round of the tournament in the 127-man field.

That marked the second consecutive tournament Thompson has been the top finisher for GW, following a T-31st finish two weeks ago at the Colleton River Collegiate. For the season, Thompson has a 75.72 scoring average which ranks fourth on the team.
