WASHINGTON - George Washington softball set a program record with its 13th straight victory Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader over St. Bonaventure to open Atlantic 10 play.
The Colonials tied the previous mark set in 2013 with their 8-2 win over the Bonnies to start the day and broke it with their 16-2 victory in five innings in the second game at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.GW (22-7, 2-0 A-10) continued its recent offensive surge, piling up 24 runs on 27 hits over the doubleheader. The Colonials produced a seven-run inning in each game to pull away from St. Bonaventure.
Elena Shelepak and Jenna Cone both hit a pair of home runs with Morgan Rinehart and Sierra Lange also going deep. The power highlight came in the fourth inning of the second game when Cone, Shelepak and Rinehart hit back-to-back-to-back long balls.
GW 8, St. Bonaventure 2: The Colonials broke open a scoreless contest with their seven-run fourth inning in the opener.
Cone led off the frame with a solo shot over the fence in left center, and GW was just getting started. Six of the next seven hitters reached with Alessandra Ponce and Priscilla Martinez recording two-run doubles. Cone finished the scoring with a two-out RBI single to make it 7-0.
Lange added the final run with her homer over the right field fence in the sixth. It was the freshman's second of the season. She also singled and scored in the fourth-inning outburst.
Sarah Costlow pitched the first six innings to improve to 8-1 on the season. The only run the senior hurler allowed was unearned, and she equaled her career high with six strikeouts. She deftly worked around six hits and a walk.
GW 16, St. Bonaventure 2 (5 innings): After falling behind 1-0, the Colonials answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Rinehart's bases-loaded single plated the first run before Ponce followed with a three-run double to the right field fence.
Cone and Sidney Bloomfield both had two singles in the inning with Cone's second one knocking in the final two runs.
GW continued piling on with three more in the second, highlighted by Criza Bulanadi's RBI double.
Shelepak extended the lead to 11-1 with her solo home run in the third before the Colonials went back-to-back-to-back in the fourth.
Cone started the run with her team-leading seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center. Shelepak followed with her fifth over the left field fence, matching the program record for homers in a game. Then, Rinehart duplicated the feat with her fourth long ball of the season.
Lange's RBI double later in the fourth extended the lead to 16-1.
Rinehart finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Cone went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Bloomfield, Shelepak, Ponce and Lange all had a pair of hits.
