MINNEAPOLIS - George Washington's Gustav Hokfelt made his debut at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday by finishing 51st in the 50-yard freestyle. The senior from Sweden touched the wall in 20.28 seconds in his preliminary heat at Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Hokfelt qualified for the national meet after winning seven gold medals, including one for the 50 free in a program record time of 20.12 seconds, at the Atlantic 10 Championships last month.
Hokfelt continues his NCAA stay Friday with his top event, the 100-yard backstroke. The GW captain is seeded 21st on the strength of his A-10 and program record time of 46.02 seconds. On Saturday, he's slated to close the competition with the 200-yard backstroke, in which he's ranked 34th (1:41.97).
This is the third straight season and fifth time overall the GW men have been represented at the NCAA Championships. Hokfelt joins Andrea Bolognesi (2016, 2017), Alvaro Fortuny (2001) and Tim Champney (1999) on the list of Colonials to compete at the prestigious meet.
