ORLANDO, Fla. - George Washington softball clinched a winning opening weekend Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac to close the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational.
The Colonials rebounded from a pair of losses Saturday to down the Bobcats in the finale at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, behind a strong pitching effort from Sarah Costlow.
After allowing a run in the opening inning, Costlow held Quinnipiac scoreless over the final six frames. The senior from California scattered six hits and didn't walk a batter. She worked around runners in scoring position in both the fifth and seventh innings to keep the Bobcats off the board and collect her second win of the season.
The Colonials (3-2) did enough offensively, taking the lead for good on Priscilla Martinez's two-run double with one out in the third inning.
GW's other run came from a second-inning home run off the bat of Alessandra Ponce. It was the first of the freshman's career. She added a single in the sixth, as well.
Rochelle Draper also collected a pair of hits, including a double.
LIU-Brooklyn 12, GW 2: The Blackbirds plated a pair of runs in the first inning of Saturday's opener and kept adding on to deal the Colonials their first loss of the season.
GW scored both of its runs in the bottom of the seventh after LIU-Brooklyn had scored six runs in the top of the inning to push its lead to 12-0. Jenna Cone had a pair of hits in the setback, including an RBI single.
Northern Iowa 11, GW 3 (Five innings): Cone smacked her second home run of the season in Saturday's nightcap, but the Colonials fell to the Panthers for their second loss of the day.
After Northern Iowa jumped in front with a five-run second inning, Cone answered with a three-run shot in the top of the third that brought home Marta Fuentes and Olivia Ortlieb.
The momentum was short-lived, though. The Panthers scored five more in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth, ultimately ending the game early via run rule.
On Deck: GW heads to California next weekend for the Amy S. Harrison Classic hosted by UC-Riverside. The Colonials are set for five games over three days with matchups against New Mexico, Montana and the host Highlanders.
