WASHINGTON - USA Basketball announced on Thursday that the 2018 Women's World Cup team that featured GW head coach Jennifer Rizzotti as an assistant coach was named the USA Basketball Team of the Year.
The Women's World Cup team was a perfect 6-0 at the 2018 FIBA World Cup, outscoring its opponents by an average of 20.3 points en route to the gold medal. As a result, the team automatically qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games.
In a release published by USA Basketball, CEO Jim Tooley said "The FIBA World Cup always is an incredibly intense and competitive event, and what the U.S. team accomplished was remarkable. The roster was not finalized until just days before the competition, yet the USA played with great teamwork and was a joy to watch on and off the court."
The World Cup was Rizzotti's first international experience as an assistant coach, but her third tournament with USA Basketball. She previously served as a scouting assistant at the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics. (Link to story earlier this year)
USA Basketball has presented the Team of the Year award annually since 1996. The Women's World Cup Team has been honored on three prior occasions.
