Four Colonials honored by conference Thursday
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After a high-scoring sophomore season, George Washington's Oscar Haynes Brown has been named to the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer All-Conference First Team.
Marcelo Lage was selected to the All-Rookie Team on Thursday, while Thor Arne Höfs and Alastair Berry earned spots on the All-Academic Team.
Haynes Brown was honored for his impressive offensive production after becoming the first Colonial since Yoni Berhanu in 2011 to notch double-digit goals. It's the fourth straight season the Colonials have produced an All-Conference First Team pick.
This fall, Haynes Brown tied for first in the A-10 with 25 points via 11 goals and three assists, despite missing five games due to injury. The London native ranked among the top 10 nationally in goals and points per game for most of the season.
Haynes Brown got his season off to a flying start, becoming the first Colonial since 2010 to record a hat trick in the season-opening win over Stony Brook on Aug. 24. Then, the midfielder/forward scored four goals and added an assist in a 6-0 win over American three days later.
In all, Haynes Brown recorded points in seven of his 12 appearances, including three of five conference contests. He was previously honored on the A-10 All-Rookie Team last fall.
Lage made an immediate impact for the Buff and Blue defensively to earn the All-Rookie nod. The Massachusetts native was the only Colonial to start all 17 games, logging a team-high 1,557 minutes. He was part of a defense that posted five shutouts and limited opponents to 1.47 goals per game, and he also contributed offensively with a goal and two assists in his first collegiate season.
Höfs is the third Colonial to ever be named to the A-10 All-Academic Team three times, joining Seth Morrison ('94) and Van Martin ('95). The senior goalkeeper carries a 3.67 GPA and is set to earn a double degree in Finance and Mathematics in December.
On the field, Höfs cemented his place among the top netminders in program history. The native of Germany closed his decorated career as the program's all-time leader in shutouts (22) and ranked fourth in saves (264). He ranked second in the A-10 with 74 stops and fourth in the conference with a .771 save percentage this fall.
Berry returned from injury to hold down a key role in the GW midfield, playing in 12 games with seven starts in his senior season. The Scotland native holds a 3.89 GPA working toward a degree in Finance. A regular on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar honoree, he earns his first All-Academic recognition.
