The Colonials went international to add Jakub Hrinda (Slovakia) and Hugo Riboud (France)
WASHINGTON – The GW golf team went international to sign a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, as Jakub Hrinda of Slovakia and France native Hugo Riboud will join the program in the fall of 2019, head coach Chuck Scheinost announced Tuesday.Â
Â
The highly-accomplished duo will add to an already diverse and multi-national roster, which is set to return Yoo Jin Kim (South Korea), Luis Alfonso Preciado (Mexico) and Clifford Thompson (South Africa).
Â
Jakub Hrinda
Doha College (Qatar)
Poprad, Slovakia
Â
A citizen of the Czech Republic and Slovakia who attends high school at Doha College in Qatar … won the 2018 Turkish Amateur Open Championship when he shot a 3-under par 285 (70-77-67-71) … the win qualifies him for a Challenge Tour event in Turkey in the spring of 2019 … a member of the Slovakia National Team … among the youngest to qualify for a European Tour event when he played in the 2015 Qatar Masters at the age of 14 … has multiple wins in the Faldo Series in the Middle East, Slovakia and Italy, and was a medalist in its Grand Finals held at the Greenbrier in West Virginia and at Mission Hills in China … the low amateur at MENA Tour's Dubai Classic at the Els Course … runner-up at Curro South Africans U19 in Cape Town … runner-up at EGA's European Young Masters in Switzerland … plays left handed … intends to major in economics … born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia … parents are Anna and Daniel … has an older sister, Laila.
Â
Coach Scheinost on Hrinda: "We are extremely excited to have Jakub join our program. He is a bright young man that will fit in well with our team. Jakub has a very solid game with plenty of length to attack any course. It's his short game, however, that is the most impressive. His ability to chip and putt allows him the opportunity to take it low if he is playing well and recover when he is not."Â
Â
Hugo Riboud
Lycee St. Thomas d'Aquin
Saint Jean De Luz, France
Â
A member of the French National Team … shot a 16-under par 272 (63-69-71-69) to win the 2018 French U18 National Championship … the 63 was a course record and helped him win by two shots … won the 2017 Grand Prix Jeunes De Bordeaux with a 2-under 142 (70-72) … placed fifth at the 2016 Scottish Boys U16 Championship, with his third-round 64 setting a course record … has also competed in tournaments in the United States, Belgium and Ireland … intends to major in business or mathematics … parents are Franck Riboud and Sandrine Mendiburu … his mother, Sandrine, was one of the top French golfers during her playing career and won the 1990 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.
Â
Coach Scheinost on Riboud: "I'm very excited for Hugo to be joining our program. He exemplifies everything that we look for in our recruits. He has a great work ethic both on the course and in the classroom, and it shows in both areas. From the first time I saw Hugo swing, I was impressed. Over the past year, he has put a lot of work into his game, and it has shown in his recent play by shooting 16-under par to win the French U18 National Championship. His ball striking gives him the ability take advantage of courses by setting up angles that allow him to be aggressive and create scoring opportunities."
