DJ Williams had a team-high 16 in the loss
UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The Michigan Wolverines came into play on Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena fresh off a 73-46 throttling of the defending Champion and eighth-ranked Villanova Wildcats in their last game. GW was well aware of the potency of the Wolverines, last year's national runners-up, but the way that Michigan handled Villanova such a stunning blow on Wednesday served as a reminder of the test GW would face in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off event.
The Colonials were game in the first half as despite falling behind 28-10 nearly 10 minutes in, the smaller GW squad stormed back with a 14-2 run over the next 6:37 of game time to pull within six, 30-24, at the 3:26 mark of the first half. Juniors DJ Williams (team-high 16 points) and Arnaldo Toro (13 points, team-high 9 rebounds) keyed the spurt with Toro netting the first two buckets and Williams accounting for 10 straight GW points as the Colonials made their move.
The comeback effort wouldn't last however as a stout Michigan defense, which hadn't allowed more than Villanova's 46 points against them all season, limited GW to just a Mezie Offurum bucket for the remainder of the half to take an uneasy 35-26 into the break.
The second half was another story as Michigan found its shooting stroke and registered three-pointers faster than a Mohegan Sun slot machine spin with a frenzy of triples. For the game, Michigan connected on 15-of-30 from three-point range and netted 49 second half points in an 84-61 win. For GW, which hung 15 more points on Michigan than any other team had this season, nine different student-athletes found the scoring column. Michigan would get 25 from Charles Matthews (10-of-13 shooting, 2-of-2 3pt. FG) and 22 from Jordan Poole (7-of-12 shooting, 5-of-8 3pt. FG) to improve to 4-0 on the year.
GW will now face South Carolina, which lost to Providence in the other semifinal, on Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPN2. GW will face another quality opponent after now seeing its four opponents on the year boast a combined 11-2 record.
