Men's Basketball Set to Face #18 Michigan in Tip-Off Tournament

The Colonials and Wolverines will tip off at noon on Saturday; GW faces either Providence or South Carolina on Sunday
TIPPING OFF: The GW men's basketball team will face a ranked opponent for the second straight game when it takes on #18 Michigan on Saturday at noon in the Air Force Reserve Tip-Off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The Colonials will then get either South Carolina or Providence on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT: Despite a career-high 17 points from DJ Williams, 15 of which came in the second half, #5 Virginia proved to be too much in a 76-57 defeat of GW last Sunday in Charlottesville. The Colonials played their best after halftime, outscoring the Cavaliers 40-34 over the final 20 minutes as Williams and Terry Nolan Jr. (11 of his 13 points in the second half) asserted themselves. UVA, though, shot 54.5 percent for the game while limiting GW to a .400 mark and forcing the Colonials into 17 turnovers.
MEMORABLE MEETING: GW and Michigan have met just once, in the Sweet Sixteen of the 1993 NCAA Tournament when the Wolverines took a 72-64 victory on their way to the championship game. Juwan Howard scored a game-high 17 points as every member of the Fab Five reached double figures to outlast the Colonials, who were led in scoring by Kwame Evans' 13 points off the bench. The run to the Sweet Sixteen as the No. 12 seed in the West Region was the deepest in school history. Led by Sports Illustrated Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-American Yinka Dare, along with GW greats Dirkk Surles and Sonni Holland, the Colonials got there with an 82-68 upset of No. 5 seed New Mexico and a 90-80 win over Southern.
GO-TO GUYS: A different player has led GW in scoring in each of the first three games this season. Redshirt junior transfer Armel Potter scored 21 in his GW debut on Nov. 6 vs. Stony Brook; sophomore Justin Mazzulla had a career-high 18 against Siena on Nov. 8; and redshirt junior transfer DJ Williams tallied a career-high 17 at Virginia last Sunday. It's sophomore Terry Nolan Jr., however, who leads the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) heading into the weekend.
"AT" IT AGAIN: After averaging 10.8 ppg and 9.5 rpg in the last 10 games of his sophomore season, junior forward Arnaldo Toro has picked up right where he left off. The Puerto Rico native opened the year with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance and is averaging 9.0 ppg and 9.3 rpg in a team-high 32.7 minutes. He's accounted for nearly 30 percent of GW's total rebounds (28 of 95) and has snagged half of the Colonials' total on the offensive end (12 of 24).
TIP-INS: Mazzulla has significantly increased his output from his freshman campaign, averaging 10.0 ppg in the first three games after averaging 1.9 a year ago while adding 5.0 rpg ... Nolan leads the team in three-point shooting, connecting at a .444 clip (8-of-18), and has made multiple threes in each game … GW is looking for its first win over a ranked team since defeating #6 Virginia, 73-67, on Nov. 16, 2015 in Smith Center. The Colonials have dropped three straight to ranked opponents since then.
