Bautista, Mahoney and Overcash selected to serve as team leaders
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball head coach Jennifer Rizzotti has announced that seniors Mei-Lyn Bautista and Kelsi Mahoney and redshirt-sophomore Sarah Overcash will serve as team captains for the 2018-19 campaign. The trio was voted on by teammates with oversight from Rizzotti and the coaching staff.
Bautista is the lone returning captain after serving as one of three leaders a year ago. She was selected to the A-10 preseason all-defensive and second team all-conference squads.
"Mei has been a leader since I arrived at GW," Rizzotti said. "She leads by example and is a natural giver; of enthusiasm, of energy and of her time and commitment to others. She has been our leader on and off the court and takes that responsibility seriously.
"I've been very happy to watch Kelsi and Sarah progress into additional leaders for our team. All three of them complement each other in all the right ways. And most importantly, I trust them and know they have my back as the head of the program."
Mahoney enjoyed a breakout junior season with career highs in every major statistical category, culminating in an A-10 All-Tournament team honor.
"Kelsi is our smartest player," Rizzotti said. "She's the one you go to for basketball questions and last year's success on the court gave her confidence and showed she can be counted on as a teammate. She also worked hard to establish relationships off the court this summer and I know her and Mei take pride as our seniors to lead, act and play the right way."
Overcash was a member of the program last season as a transfer from Illinois, but is now able to play with three years of eligibility remaining.
"Sitting out last season and having a coach's perspective really allowed Sarah to understand what was important to me," Rizzotti said. "She knows what she wants our program to stand for and how she can enforce those standards. She has led by example in so many ways. She's one of our hardest workers, she does all the little things and embraces how she can positively impact our team with her intangible qualities. I'm excited to hear her voice grow as the season continues and throughout the rest of her career."
GW opens its season on Thursday, Nov. 8, at JMU before igniting its home slate on Sunday, Nov. 11, against Princeton.
