NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington men's swimming and diving was picked as the favorite to win a repeat Atlantic 10 title in a vote of the conference's coaches, released Tuesday.
The Colonials received five of eight first-place votes in the annual preseason poll. They celebrated their first conference crown in program history last February.
This season's A-10 Championships will be held Feb. 14-17, 2018, at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
"It's a great privilege and honor that the other A-10 coaches see us as favorites to defend our title this year," GW Head Coach James Winchester said. "For us, it's a nice consideration, but in all honesty, everyone starts even right now.
"There's a lot of great teams in this conference that are definitely looking at us with a target on our backs, but we're going to embrace that challenge and hopefully put ourselves in the best position to contend for the conference title in February."
GW brings back a slew of proven performers, including six All-Conference First Team picks. The group is paced by returning A-10 individual champions Gustav Hokfelt, Moritz Fath and Adam Drury.
The Colonials must replace All-American Andrea Bolognesi, but they've added six freshmen, plus Cleveland State transfer Tommi Wolst, who earned a Horizon League title in the 100-yard breaststroke last season.
The GW women were picked fifth out of 11 schools. The Colonials are seeking to improve on a sixth-place finish at last season's conference meet.
