LAWRENCE, Kan. - Moritz Fath's third-place finish helped George Washington men's swimming and diving land third as a team at Saturday's season-opening College Swimming Coaches Association of America Open Water Nationals.
The GW women placed sixth out of 12 squads in the unique event, led by a 12th-place finish from Gemma Atherley.
Eight Colonials in all began the season by tackling the 5,000-meter race consisting of two loops around a marked course at Lone Star Lake.
Fath got his sophomore season off to a strong start, reaching the finish in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 4.69 seconds. He was followed by Emils Pone (13th), Shawn Lemarie (25th) and Jarrod Hendricks (31st).
The top three swimmers on each side scored, which put the Colonials behind only champion Missouri and Carson Newman in the team standings.
Atherley has open water experience growing up in the Channel Islands, and she used that familiarity to finish in 1:06:30.21. Freshman Andrea Ho placed 25th in her GW debut, followed by Lucy Castro (29th) and Emily Zhang (41st).
Host Kansas won the women's team championship.
