MODIMOLLE, South Africa -- Incoming freshman golfer Clifford Thompson captured his first victory in a national tournament by posting a 7-under 209 at the Limpopo Amateur Open Championship which was held July 14-16 at Koro Creek Golf Estate.
Thompson shot a 4-under 68 in the final round, including a birdie on the 18th hole, to win by a shot. Amid winds resembling coastal conditions that saw the second-place finisher bogey three holes in a row down the stretch, Thompson turned in a flawless scorecard. He made no bogeys in the final round, and was also bogey-free in his first round 71.
His final round 68 featured some slick work on the greens that enabled him to be one of only two players in the field to card a sub-70 round.
"It was my putter that saved me today," Thompson said.
Thompson is one of two freshmen set to join the GW golf team this fall, along with Stephen Brown of Los Angeles. They'll join a squad which returns all five of its players who competed in the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, where GW finished fourth.
