
Softball Splits with La Salle on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington softball team split a series-opening doubleheader at La Salle on Saturday afternoon, dominating in the nightcap to claim victory.
The Colonials (17-17, 2-6 A-10) scored a season-high 13 runs to take a five-inning, 13-2, win in game two of the doubleheader after falling 5-2 to open the day.
The Colonials scored early and often in game two, exploding for five runs in the first on five hits, including RBI doubles from freshmen Jenna Cone and Priscilla Martinez and senior Paige Kovalsky.
The Buff and Blue added three more in the second, again with RBI hits from Cone and Martinez. A sac fly from freshman Gabby Gallone accounted for the third run, giving GW an 8-0 lead after two innings.
The Colonials tacked on two more in the fourth when junior Morgan Rinehart's grounder plated one and an RBI single from Gallone sent another across the plate.
The Explorers avoided the shutout with two runs in the fourth on three hits.
GW put the game well beyond reach with three final runs in the fifth on three hits, with the help of a sac fly from Cone and a two-RBI single from Martinez.
The game ended after five innings, by virtue of the run rule, with the Colonials taking a 13-2 victory.
Martinez (3-for-4) finished the game with five RBI and a run scored, while Cone (3-for-3, 3 R) drove in three. Four different Colonials tallied multi-hit games in the squad's 14-hit effort.
Freshman Faith Weber (2-4) earned the complete game victory, allowing four hits and two runs over five innings of work without allowing a walk.
In game one, the La Salle scored first with one in the second on two hits to take a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials tied it up in the fifth when Rinehart singled to start the inning, stole second then scored after two wild pitches to even the score at 1-1.
La Salle pulled away in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs - two earned - to move ahead 4-1.
GW answered in the sixth when Cone blasted her league-leading 15th home run of the season, a solo shot to right to put the score at 4-2.
The Explorers responded with one more run in the sixth, and the Colonials were unable to rally as La Salle took the series opener, 5-2.
First pitch in Sunday's rubber match is slated for 12 p.m.
