BRONX, N.Y. - The George Washington softball team split a series-ending doubleheader at defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham on Sunday.
GW (24-21, 7-10 A-10) took the first game of the day, 5-1, with the help of a pair of round-trippers before Fordham took the nightcap and the series with a 12-0 win in Sunday's game two.
The Colonials broke a scoreless stalemate in the top of the third of game one on an RBI single from junior Rochelle Draper. Fordham quickly evened the score in the bottom of the frame with the help of a sacrifice fly.
Rookie Jessica Linquist plated the go-ahead run in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle. Sophomore Riley Tejcek later blasted a solo home run to left in the sixth to put GW ahead, 3-1.
The Buff and Blue put the game away with two runs in the seventh, courtesy of freshman Jenna Cone's 18th home run of the season - a two-run shot to center. With the long-ball, Cone snapped GW's single-season RBI record, driving in her 54th run of the season to best Victoria Valos' ('15) 53 RBIs in 2013.
Fordham was unable to rally in the seventh, giving GW a 5-1 triumph.
Junior Sarah Costlow earned the complete game win by yielding just four hits in seven innings of work.
The Colonials notched eight hits in the game, led by two-hit efforts from Tejcek and junior Morgan Rinehart.
Fordham came out swinging in the series finale, scoring four runs on three hits in the first to jump out in front. The Rams added three more on three hits in the second and plated an additional two in the third to take a 9-0 lead.
GW's lone hit of the game came in the form of a single from Paige Kovalsky in the fourth.
Fordham scored three more on two hits in the fourth to take a 12-0 win in the fifth by virtue of the run rule.
GW continues a set of seven-consecutive road games on Wednesday with a single game at Virginia.
