ARLINGTON, Va. - Senior Joey Bartosic stole three bases across two games to become the George Washington baseball team's career-stolen base leader in a doubleheader loss to Rhode Island on Sunday at Tucker Field.
Rhode Island took game one, 7-2, before prevailing in the nightcap, 5-3.
Game 1: Rhode Island 7, GW 2
Junior Robbie Metz was on the mound for game one and held Rhode Island scoreless through the first four innings. He helped his own cause by giving the Colonials a lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Rams tied the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly before plating two runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to move ahead, 3-1.
GW cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the seventh when junior Brandon Chapman led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an infield, RBI single by Bartosic.
Rhode Island plated four runs in the top half of the ninth for key insurance runs. The runs came via a two-run double followed by a two-run home run for the final 7-2 count.
Game 2: Rhode Island 5, GW 3
Freshman Elliott Raimo got the start and retired the first nine batters he faced in order while a RBI groundout by Chapman in the bottom of the second gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
The Rams assumed the lead on a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Colonials answered in the top of the fifth when Chapman and junior Mark Osis walked to open the inning before each moving up a base on a sac bunt. Bartosic then came through with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one run at 3-2.
Osis led off the seventh inning with a walk, moved to second on a balk and then to third on a single by Bartosic. A perfectly-executed double steal tied the game as Bartosic swiped second and Osis came home to score. The stolen base was the 80th of Bartosic's career, making him GW's new all-time career leader.
Rhode Island used the long ball once again in the top of the eighth to break the tie as a two-run home run accounted for the deciding runs in a 5-3 win over the Colonials.
Osis made an unforgettable defensive play in the top half of the ninth as he charged hard into foul territory and dove over the bullpen fence to make the second out of the inning. He tumbled over the fence and landed violently on the other side before presenting the ball to the umpires and emerging unhurt to retake his position in the field.
The Colonials were unable to use the momentum in the bottom half of the ninth.
GW will visit Delaware State on Wednesday before returning home to host Davidson this weekend in a three-game set at Tucker Field.
