WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team dropped a heartbreaker in Sunday's series finale with Massachusetts, 4-3, at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

The Colonials (14-16, 1-5 A-10), playing as the visiting team throughout a series that was originally scheduled to be played at UMass, took a lead into the seventh inning but the Minutewomen staged a comeback to win the rubber match.

GW scored in the top of the first as freshman Jessica Linquist singled and came around to score on a base hit from classmate Priscilla Martinez.

The Colonials posted another run in the fourth, this time with the help of a UMass miscue. With two outs, rookie Elena Shelepak singled and advanced to third on a double off the bat of junior Rochelle Draper. Freshman Faith Weber then reached on an error and allowed Shelepak to score to give GW a 2-0 lead.

The Buff and Blue again scored with two outs, this time in the fifth, when Linquist and fellow rookie Jenna Cone posted back-to-back singles to put two on with two outs for Martinez. Again coming up clutch, Martinez singled to drive one in and put GW ahead 3-0.

The Minutewomen got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after a walk, stolen base and a single plated one.

Down 3-1, UMass staged a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, using a walk and three hits to grab a walkoff, 4-3, win over the Colonials.

Linquist (2-for-4, 2 Runs) and Martinez (2-for-3 2 RBI) posted multi-hit games for the Colonials as the squad totaled seven hits on the day.

GW returns to action for a doubleheader at Coppin State on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
