DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The George Washington Lacrosse team dropped a 14-11 decision to Atlantic 10 foe Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Junior Jocelyn Donohue paced the Colonials with three goals, netting her fifth hat trick of the season, while seniors Cassidy Shollenberger and Michaela Lynch, and junior Brooke Sands had two goals apiece, and freshmen Aidan Cage and Caroline Kiernan tallied one goal each. With her two goals and three assists, Lynch tallied a season-high five points and reached a milestone with 100 career points as a Colonial.
GW (2-7, 1-1 A-10) held a 14-13 edge in draw controls, led by a game- and season-high tying six draws from Kiernan.
The Colonials were on the defensive from the start, forcing one turnover and blocking six shots in the opening minutes of play. Davidson continued to apply the offensive pressure, breaking through the GW defense to make it 2-0 with back-to-back goals off the draw. The Colonials rebounded with a goal of their own just 52 seconds later, with Michaela Lynch finding Donohue to put GW on the board. Shollenberger found the back of the net to tie the score moments later, while Donohue put the Colonials ahead by one at the 17:35 mark with her second goal of the game. The two teams traded goals to make it 6-6 with 5:17 left in the first, but GW pushed ahead with another goal from Donohue and an unassisted goal from Lynch to make it 8-6 going into the break.
The Wildcats responded quickly to start the second half, finding the back of the net at the 28:57 mark. Moments later, Cage converted a pass from Lynch to keep the Colonials up 9-7. Davidson fought back with a 5-0 run of its own, before Sands found the back with 13:56 to play. Sands scored once more for the Colonials, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 14-11 Davidson lead.
In the crease, junior keeper Adele Wise made nine saves in 54:09 while senior Erin Long made one save in the final 5:51 minutes of play.
The Colonials return home to host Richmond on Friday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. at the GW Lacrosse Field at the Mount Vernon Campus.
