STOCKHOLM, Sweden - George Washington men's swimming and diving junior Gustav Hokfelt made history over the weekend, setting a Swedish national record in the 50-meter backstroke at the 2017 Swim Open Stockholm on Sunday.
"Gustav's performances have been at a world-class level this weekend and put him in a good position to represent his country this summer," said second-year head coach James Winchester. "Gustav is one of the most competitive people in our program, and has a relentless passion for improvement."
Hokfelt competed in his home city of Stockholm and snapped the national record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 25.34 to win the event, besting the previous mark of 25.46 set in 2008 by Potnus Renholm.
Hokfelt's performance ranks him ninth in the world in the 50m back for this year.
"To be ranked in the top-10 in the world is an incredible achievement," said Winchester. "We look forward to having him back on campus and preparing him for a summer of international competition."
The junior closed competition on Monday in the 100m back, taking third in 55.53 as the highest-placing Swede in the event.
The Swim Open Stockholm doubles as a national team selection meet for this summer's various competitions.
"Credit has to go to his incredible work ethic and direction under the guidance of our sprint program led by Assistant Coach Birkir Jonsson," said Winchester.
