WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team defeated Howard, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (8-7) swept singles action to triumph in the squad's outdoor home opener.
The pair of sophomore Maria Siopacha and junior Kamilla Beisenova began the day with a victory at No. 2 doubles, but Howard claimed close matches at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots to come away with the early point.
The Colonials quickly tied the match in singles play as senior Taylor Nederlander claimed a straight-set win at No. 4. Junior Marie-Louise Decamps then gave GW the lead, blanking her opponent in two sets.
Siopacha then completed an undefeated day with a straight-set victory of her own at the top position before Beisenova followed suit to clinch the match at No. 5.
Senior Allison Hansen increased GW's lead with a triumph at No. 6, and sophomore Sara Grubac closed the day with a three-set win in the No. 3 slot, giving the Colonials a 6-1 victory.
The Colonials return to action to visit Atlantic 10 foe Richmond on the road next Saturday.
