Softball Splits with UMass on Saturday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team grabbed its first Atlantic 10 win of the season on Saturday, downing Massachusetts to open a doubleheader at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (14-15, 1-4 A-10) split the day's play, first defeating the Minutewomen, 4-1, before falling in the nightcap, 4-0. UMass (11-15, 1-1 A-10) played as the home team in both contests, as the games were originally scheduled to be played in Massachusetts but were moved to the District due to inclement weather.
GW got on the board first in game one, as freshman Jenna Cone smacked her school-record 13th home run of the season to center field, giving the Colonials a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Buff and Blue added three more in the third after senior Megan Linn led off the frame with a single and stole second. Cone and rookie Priscilla Martinez walked to load the bases for classmate Elena Shelepak, who doubled to right center to clear the bases and give GW a 4-0 advantage.
Junior starter Sarah Costlow held the Minutewomen scoreless until the seventh, when a walk and two hits plated one for UMass, but the rally fell short as the Colonials claimed a 4-1 triumph.
Her tenth complete game of the season, Costlow (7-5, 2.16 ERA) issued just three free passes in seven innings of work, yielding seven hits.
Massachusetts started the scoring in game two when a two hits and a hit batter brought one across in the first. Two walks and a single in the second gave UMass a 2-0 lead. Another pair of runs in the fifth proved too much for GW to overcome, as the Minutewomen claimed a 4-0 win, holding the Colonials to four hits.
GW returns to action on Sunday for the series finale at the GW Softball Field at the Mount Vernon Campus at noon.
