WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad opens its home season on Saturday in the weather-shortened Colonial Classic at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials are slated for four games as Bucknell, Monmouth and Quinnipiac visit the District.
Due to impending inclement weather, games scheduled for Friday have been canceled.
The Colonials (3-6) return to action after competing at the UNC-Greensboro Invitational last weekend. GW closed the tournament with a 10-1 victory over the host Spartans in five innings with the help of a monster game for freshman Jenna Cone, who blasted her first career grand slam and tallied five RBIs.
Junior Sarah Costlow has led GW in the circle so far on the young season with a 2-2 record and a team-best 3.65 ERA, while holding batters to just a .244 average.
Rookie Elena Shelepak leads the team with a .423 average (11-for-26) and has started each game for the Colonials this season.
Bucknell (8-2) is off to a strong start in 2017 and brings a three-game win streak into the weekend.
Monmouth (1-4) has one weekend of play in the books and most recently downed Eastern Kentucky in extra innings.
Quinnipiac (3-2) opened the season at the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invite from Feb. 17-19 and claimed victories over Central Michigan, Villanova and Eastern Michigan. The Colonials and Bobcats will meet for the first time in program history on Saturday.
GW will take on Quinnipiac and Monmouth in doubleheader action on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. to open their weekend of play.
