2017 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Ahead of this weekend's conference championship at the Richmond Coliseum, the Atlantic 10 announced that a trio of George Washington women's basketball players have earned A-10 All-Conference honors.
Graduate student Lexi Martins was named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team and was also recognized on the All-Academic Team. Senior Caira Washington earned a spot on the A-10 All-Conference Second Team in addition to being named to the All-Defensive Team. Senior Hannah Schaible was also named to the All-Defensive Team.
Following a standout three-year career at Lehigh, Martins transitioned flawlessly into the Colonials lineup to earn First Team All-Conference honors and a spot on the All-Academic Team. Martins has played in all 28 games this season, with 11 starts, and has registered five 20+ point games, 16 double-digit scoring games and eight double-doubles while leading the Colonials in both scoring (12.5) and rebounding (7.7). Her output increases in Atlantic 10 Conference games, in which she ranks fourth in the league in scoring (16.1) and fifth in rebounding (8.8). She has also been GW's leading rebounder in 13 games this season while pacing the team in scoring 10 times. She is a career 1000-point (1,399), 1,000-rebound (1,096) student-athlete spanning her three seasons at Lehigh and her senior season at GW.
In the classroom, Martins boasts a cumulative grade-point average of 3.96 across the Summer 2016 and Fall 2016 semesters as she works towards her Masters in Health Administration. She registered a 4.0 GPA in Fall 2016 after earning her degree in Political Science in three years from Lehigh with a 3.62 undergraduate GPA. Last year she was the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-Patriot League selection in 2015-16.
A three-time A-10 Player of the Week this season, Washington earns her fourth-career postseason All-Conference recognition following a standout senior season. She has posted five double-doubles thus far, with a pair of 20-point games and 17 double-figure scoring games. She continues to lead the Atlantic 10 and rank 14th in the nation with a career-best .600 field-goal percentage while averaging 11.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, despite missing four games last month to injury. She has set single-game career-high totals in assists and blocks this season and is only the second player in program history with both 1,000 points (1,501) and 1,000 rebounds (1,041) at GW. Defensively, Washington ranks in the top five in the conference for both total blocks (54) and blocks per game (2.25).
Schaible earns her first career postseason award from the Atlantic 10 with a spot on the league's All-Defensive Team. In addition to dominating categories that do not show up on stat sheets - loose balls won, deflections, turnovers caused - Schaible leads the conference in steals per game (2.5) and ranks second in total swipes (70), both career-highs. She has set single-game career-high totals in points, steals and minutes played in 2016-17 and has registered at least four steals in nine games this season. Offensively, she has 10 double-figure scoring games, including a pair of 20-point performances, while averaging 9.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Earlier this season she became the 32nd member of GW's 1,000-point club and currently ranks 14th all-time with 711 career boards.
GW tips off its run in the Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday afternoon in a quarterfinal matchup against Duquesne at 4:30 p.m. at the Richmond Coliseum.
