WASHINGTON - On an emotionally-charged evening at the Charles E. Smith Center, the No. 20 George Washington gymnastics team cracked the 196.00 threshold for the third time this season en route to a second-place finish at its annual Pink Meet on Friday evening.
GW totaled 196.05 to finish just shy of first-place and No. 22 Iowa (196.40) while besting Maryland (195.275), East Atlantic Gymnastics League rival and reigning conference-champion Pittsburgh (194.725) and William & Mary (192.725).
For all of the action-packed routines throughout the meet, it was a special moment prior to the competition that left not a dry eye in the house. Senior co-captain Chelsea Raineri was surprised by the return of her older brother Collin, who got off an overseas flight and travelled directly to the Smith Center to surprise his younger sister.
Collin, a Sergeant in the Army Reserves, spent the past year overseas in Kuwait serving in the 160th Signal Brigade as part of the 392nd Expeditionary Signal Brigade.
You can see the full surprise here or below.
Once regaining her composure, Raineri went directly to the vault where she hit for a 9.80, the second-highest GW routine on that event for the evening. She also scored 9.80 on uneven bars and 9.70 on floor exercise.
The Colonials were led on Friday night by juniors Jillian Winstanley and Cami Drouin-Allaire, who finished second and third in the all-around, respectively.
Winstanley scored a season-high 39.275, aided by a career-high tying 9.90 on uneven bars where she tied for first place. She also tied for third on floor exercise with a season-high 9.85, placed fourth on balance beam with a 9.85 and added a 9.675 on vault.
Drouin-Allaire's all-around score was also a season-high as she tallied 39.275. She tied for first place on floor exercise with a season-best 9.90 in addition to marks of 9.825 on vault (3rd), 9.70 on uneven bars (22nd) and 9.775 on balance beam (T-11th).
GW's best event of the evening was balance beam where the Colonials cracked 49.00 as a team for the sixth time in seven meets this year with a 49.05. Junior Liz Pfeiler finished behind Winstanley with a 9.825 (5th) while juniors Sara Mermelstein and Alex Zois tied for sixth place with a 9.80.
Pfeiler also performed well on uneven bars, finishing tied for sixth with a 9.85 while Zois took 10th overall with a 9.825.
On floor exercise, the trio of Winstanley, senior Alex DeMoura and junior Madeline Seibold all tied for third at 9.85.
GW continues its busy weekend on Sunday when it visits No. 2 and National Runner Up LSU for a tri-meet with the Tigers and Iowa.
