WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team fell to Massachusetts, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center.
Sophomore Sara Grubac grabbed wins in both singles and doubles for the Colonials (1-3) but UMass (4-2) took the remaining bouts to put the match out of reach.
The Buff and Blue battled in doubles play as senior Allison Hansen teamed up with Grubac to take a hard-fought, 7-6 (8-6), win at the No. 3 position, but the Minutewomen came away with the top two spots to claim a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
UMass increased its lead to 3-0 with victories at the Nos. 3-4 slots. Grubac kept the Colonials alive with her 6-4, 6-2 triumph in fifth-flight play, but the Minutewomen clinched the match after winning the No. 2 spot. UMass went on to take the final two singles bouts at Nos. 1 and 6 for a final score of 6-1.
The Colonials are back in action on Sunday as they visit Navy for a 9 a.m. match in Annapolis, Maryland.
