PITTSBURGH - George Washington men's soccer senior Tobi Adewole has signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League (USL) for its upcoming season, the club announced on Monday.
"I'm really happy and looking forward to starting off my professional soccer career with Pittsburgh," said Adewole. "Pittsburgh is a great city and I hope to have a lot of success there. I know this is a start to a very promising future and I am excited to see how I can help the club to have a successful season."
Adewole capped a strong collegiate career with the Colonials in 2016, earning Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors for the second time as a defender. A 2015 NSCAA All-Midwest Region Third Team honoree, Adewole led GW's back line and helped the Colonials become A-10 Regular Season Champions as a junior. In his final season the Ashton, Maryland, native helped the Buff and Blue post a league-best 0.62 GAA while GW's defense notched a program-record nine clean sheets.
Adwole also displayed offensive skills throughout his tenure, totaling 15 points on five goals and five assists.
"I'm delighted for Tobi to be signing his first professional contract," said GW head coach Craig Jones. "At GW he has worked so hard to keep improving his game and I look forward to following his career as he makes the step up to the pro ranks. I believe Pittsburgh is a great place to start his pro career. They have a great set-up in all areas - the facility, history, ownership and the coaching staff - everything Tobi needs to be successful at the next level."
The USL is the largest professional soccer league in the United States and Canada with 29 teams in 19 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. The U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) recently granted the USL provisional Division 2 status beginning in the 2017 season. The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are an official affiliate of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew SC.
A member of the USL's Eastern Conference, the Riverhounds compete at the 4,000-capacity Highmark Stadium on Pittsburgh's South Side.
