TIPPING OFF: The George Washington women's basketball team, winners of two in a row and five of its last six games, will open a key Atlantic 10 road swing with a visit to Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from the Mullins Center is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: GW used a big fourth quarter and was led by a career-high tying 15 points from senior Shannon Cranshaw to earn a 76-62 win over Davidson on Sunday at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Cranshaw connected on four three-pointers, her ninth game this season with multiple triples, to pace four Colonials in double figures.
A-10 HONOR: Graduate student Lexi Martins was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Monday after playing a key role in GW's two wins last week. She picked up her fifth (16 points, 10 rebounds at George Mason) and sixth (14 points, 10 rebounds vs. Davidson) double-doubles of the year to continue her run of at least 10 and 10 in each of the Colonials' six A-10 games this season.
DEFEND & DEFEAT: GW leads the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to .358 shooting from the field, and ranks third in the conference in three-point defense (.270).
GW boasts a 9-1 overall record when an opponent shoots between 35- and 45-percent and is 7-1 when limiting an opponent to 60 points or less.
BENCH BOOST: The play of GW's reserves has been a huge part of a 5-1 start to conference play as the Colonials' bench is averaging 24.7 points per game in A-10 contests.
Cranshaw's 15 points against Davidson, along with a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Kelsi Mahoney, accounted for 21 of GW's 23 bench points against the Wildcats on Sunday. Mahoney also impacted the game elsewhere, posting career highs of five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 16 minutes.
SCOUTING UMASS: Under the direction of first-year head coach Tony Verdi, UMass is 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the A-10 after Thursday's home loss to Saint Bonaventure.
Four players average double figures, led by freshman Hailey Leidel who ranks third overall in the Atlantic 10 at 16.7 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY: GW dominates the all-time series by a 39-10 margin, winning each game by an average of 18.4 points.
All 10 of the losses have occurred on the road, but GW still holds an above .500 (14-10) record away from home.
