TIPPING OFF: The GW men's basketball team will look to get back to its winning ways on the road as it visits VCU on Wednesday for a nationally-televised game on ESPN2 with tip set for 6 p.m. The Colonials are 2-2 on the road this season after picking up wins over Harvard and Temple, before dropping their last two away from home -- at Miami in the non-conference finale, and at Saint Joseph's in the A-10 opener.
LAST TIME OUT: Despite a valiant comeback attempt in which GW cut a 23-point second half deficit to four, the Colonials ultimately succumbed to the Richmond Spiders, 77-70, at the Smith Center on Sunday. GW fell to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in A-10 play with the loss. Tyler Cavanaugh led GW with a game-high 22 points along with a team-high seven rebounds and team-high tying four assists, while Yuta Watanabe tallied 15 points with three blocks and three steals on the defensive end. Jaren Sina was another Colonial in double-figures with 10.
ABOUT VCU: The Rams enter Wednesday's matchup riding a seven-game winning streak and own a 13-3 overall mark, including 3-0 in the Atlantic 10. VCU is 7-1 at home, with the lone loss coming in overtime to Georgia Tech on Dec. 7, which was also the last loss before they embarked on their current winning streak. Point guard JeQuan Lewis leads the team in scoring (15.9 ppg) and is fifth in the conference with 4.4 assists per game.
SERIES HISTORY: VCU holds a 9-2 advantage, including 3-1 at home, with the Colonials winning their first ever game at the Siegel Center last Feb. 6 by a score of 72-69. In that game, then-senior Patricio Garino poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the Colonials to victory. The Rams avenged the loss with a 69-65 win at the Smith Center on Feb. 27.
HEATING UP: Cavanaugh is coming off a pair of 20-point outings, having scored 20 vs. Davidson and 22 vs. Richmond. The graduate student has six 20-point games on the year and 17 in his career. He also has five double-doubles this year which ranks second in the Atlantic 10, while his 16.9 ppg are 11th in the league and his 7.6 rpg are fifth.
NOTABLE: Jaren Sina ranks second in the conference in free throw percentage (.909, 40-44), and the point guard helped seal the win over Davidson with four clutch free throws down the stretch … Jordan Roland saw a streak of six straight games in double figures snapped when he was held to two points vs. Richmond … the sophomore is still second on the team in scoring over the last seven games with 12.4 ppg … GW is averaging 16.3 assists per game over the last seven after averaging 11.0 in the first nine games of the year.
