COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Maria Siopacha advanced to the singles semifinal round on day two of GW women's tennis' fall-opening Mid-Atlantic Bedford Cup at the Junior Tennis Champions Center.
The eighth-seeded Siopacha defeated top-seeded Jona Roka of James Madison in come-from-behind fashion, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, to stay alive in the main singles draw and advance to Sunday's semifinal. The sophomore will take on fourth-seeded Timea Guibe, also from James Madison, on Sunday for a chance to advance to Sunday afternoon's final.
Rookie Melis Bayraktaroglu earned a pair of wins on Saturday in consolation play, coming from behind to take a hard-fought 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, win over Maryland's Olivia Gaudreault before grabbing a decision by virtue of retirement after being ahead 6-1 after the first set over Georgetown's sixth-seeded Victorie Saperstein.
Also in consolation play, junior Marie-Louise Decamps notched a straight-set victory over VCU's Gabriela Araujo, 6-4, 6-1.
Junior Kamilla Beisenova split her consolation matches on Saturday, falling to Saperstein before downing Gaudreault, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Victoria Kogan also split her singles matches, defeating Carentxa Geode of Coppin State, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to VCU's Magda Aubets.
In doubles play, the pairs of Bayraktaroglu and Beisenova and Kogan and Decaps dropped consolation matches by identical scores of 6-3. The duo of Siopacha and senior Taylor Nederlander defaulted.
Singles and doubles consolation play will continue on Sunday.
