
GW Women's Tennis Posts Strong Day at ITA Regionals

NORFOLK, Va. - The George Washington women's tennis squad posted a successful first day of competition at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships hosted by Old Dominion on Friday.
Sophomore Maria Siopacha earned a spot in the singles main draw with two qualifying victories. Siopacha first grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Radford's Natalie Sayer before downing Penn State's Jacqueline Zuhse, 6-3, 6-3.
Junior Marie-Louise Decamps will begin ITA Regional play on Saturday, joining Siopacha in the singles main draw Round of 64.
Freshman Melis Bayraktaroglu battled in her first qualifying match, taking a comeback 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 win over James Madison's Dylan Owens. Bayraktarglu then fell to Callie Frey of Pitt in straight sets.
In doubles action, the pair of Bayraktaroglu and Siopacha took a strong 8-3 victory over Old Dominion's Adriana Rajkovic and Ingrid Vojinakova to advance to the Round of 32. The next two rounds of doubles play will occur on Saturday.
The ITA Atlantic Region Championships are a four-day tournament that will conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
