SOMERS, Wis. - George Washington men's swimming and diving senior Andrea Bolognesi has been named a CollegeSwimming.com Division I Men's Pre-Season All-America selection for the 100 breaststroke, the organization announced on Monday.
A total of 123 men's and women's swimmers from thirty institutions were selected. Bolognesi serves as the only student-athlete from the Atlantic 10 to earn the preseason honor.
"It's a great honor for Andrea and for our program to receive this prestigious recognition," said head coach James Winchester. "Andrea's performances last season were historic for our conference, and I'm happy to see GW breaking through to gain some national attention."
The Cuveglio, Italy, native was selected after earning NCAA First Team All-America honors in the 100 breast in 2015-16 for his eighth-place finish (52.06) at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in March. Bolognesi's NCAA performance broke the program and conference record he had previously set at the 2016 A-10 Championships.
Bolognesi became GW's first-ever men's All-American and earned the Colonials a 33rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships - the best finish in program history.
"Achieving at the highest levels is part of our vision for the program here at GW," said Winchester. "Andrea's performances have laid a foundation that has already inspired the next generation of Colonials. With a strong incoming recruiting class, and a lot of positive buzz around our program, it's a great time to be a Colonial."
