WASHINGTON -- The George Washington golf team will play in five fall tournaments starting Sept. 12-13 with the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational as part of its 2016-17 schedule, fourth-year head coach Chuck Scheinost announced Tuesday.
The Colonials, who are coming off a fourth-place team finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships last season in which both rising junior Christian Cichan and rising sophomore Logan Lowe finished in the top 13, will also compete against strong fields at the VCU Janney Invitational (Sept. 19-20) and the NC State Wolfpack Invitational (Oct. 3-4).
"I'm very excited for this upcoming season and I believe we have a really good schedule that will push us but will also allow us to showcase the talent of our team to some of the top teams in the country," said Scheinost. "This fall VCU and NC State will be our strongest fields where we will be able to test ourselves against several teams from the ACC, Big 10 and Big 12."
GW continues its fall slate at the Elon Invitational in Burlington, N.C., on Oct. 17-18 before closing the season with the Old Dominion/OBX Invitational in Powells Point, N.C.
The spring season opens in Miami, Florida, at Weston Hills Country Club with the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship on Feb. 20-21, where GW will face seven of its conference rivals in match play. After a three-week break, the Colonials will spend spring break in Myrtle Beach, S.C., competing in the Appalachian State Bash at the Beach Invitational on March 13-14.
The Buff and Blue then head from South Carolina to Florida to play in the George Mason Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on March 18-19 at El Cameon Golf Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. On April 3-4, GW will tee it up in the East Carolina Intercollegiate at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
GW then will look to improve upon its fourth place finish in the A-10 Championship, which returns to Grand Cyprus Golf Resort in Orlando, from April 28-30.
"Overall I believe our schedule provides a great mix of competition from all over the country," said Scheinost. "We have been continually improving the overall strength of schedule and I believe this year's schedule will provide our guys with a great test and hopefully prepare us to accomplish our ultimate goal of winning the Atlantic 10 Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championship."
