WASHINGTON - The George Washington gymnastics team held its annual end-of-season awards banquet over the weekend, the final event in what was another banner year for the program.
The Colonials honored a total of nine student-athletes following a strong 2016 season that featured the highest postseason score in program history at the 2016 NCAA Athens Regional. The season also included a pair of East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) event championships, the EAGL Gymnast of the Year and eight All-EAGL selections.
Juniors Chelsea Raineri and Alex DeMoura were named co-recipients of the evening's top honor, the Lindsey Ferris Attitude is Everything Award. The award is presented annually to the GW gymnast who best exemplifies the team spirit and leadership qualities of the late gymnastics alumna. The duo will be recognized at next season's Lindsey Ferris Invitational.
Raineri was also honored as the "Entertainer of the Year" for the second consecutive season while DeMoura earned the Most Consistent "Stoicovy" Award, named in honor of current assistant coach Stephanie Stoicovy Worrell.
Sophomore Alex Zois took home both the Outstanding Rookie Performer Award and the Most Improved Award. Sidelined for her true freshman season with an injury, Zois returned with a vengeance in 2016, earning a share of the EAGL uneven bars title and being named First Team All-EAGL on uneven bars and Second Team on balance beam.
The sophomore duo of Cami Drouin-Allaire and Jillian Winstanley each shared the various Top Performer Awards. Drouin-Allaire, the 2016 EAGL Gymnast of the Year, earned the honor for vault and floor exercise while Winstanley won for all-around, vault, uneven bars and balance beam.
Winstanley was also the recipient of the Clutch Performer Award, as well as the Karen Ercole Academic Award, named for the recently-retired Associate Director of Athletics for Educational Support Services.
Senior Alexsis Petrikis and junior Kaila Solomon shared the Mary Jo Warner Colonial Heart Award, named after the longtime Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator who retired in July 2014. Petrikis and Solomon were honored as being an enormous part of the team's success for playing major roles behind the scenes and on the sidelines.
